What is a disadvantage of gate valves?

Gate valves are designed to provide a straight flow path and minimal pressure drop when they are fully open, which makes them ideal for applications where the valve is either fully open or fully closed. However, one of the significant disadvantages of gate valves is that they can be prone to jamming. This occurs because the gate (the movable part of the valve) may become stuck due to material buildup, corrosion, or wear over time. Additionally, if the valve has not been operated regularly, sediment can accumulate and make it difficult for the gate to move freely.

In situations where quick, frequent adjustments to flow are necessary, gate valves might not be the best choice since their mechanism is not designed for throttling. This jamming issue can lead to operational delays and potentially hazardous situations, especially in maritime applications, hence it is crucial for tankerman assistants to be aware of this limitation.
